SOCIETIES AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES

Cultural

At Dale we believe in the holistic development of our learners and we also recognise that not all Dalians have strengths centred around sports. Every Dalian has a talent, be it on the sports field, behind a chessboard, passionately debating a topic, expressing themselves through art, or giving of themselves in service to others.

To this end all Dalians are encouraged to join at least one society or cultural activity. This allows them to become involved in a wide range of activities and interests outside their normal school curriculum. Here they can explore, develop and discover a wide variety of talents and interests. Besides providing opportunities for personal growth and enjoyment, school societies also offer excellent opportunities to make like-minded friends and make lasting memories.

The following cultural activities or societies are offered:

ART CLUB

The art club is a space to explore expression and creativity. A place where artists can explore different mediums and create. It is a place where it is OK to be yourself and yet still celebrate our differences in styles and artwork.

BLOOD PEER PROMOTERS

Blood peer promoters serve their community and work with the Blood Bank to encourage learners and the larger community to Donate and save a life.

Chess Society

Dale has an excellent, dedicated chess team that is growing in leaps and bounds. Players must use problem-solving skills to decide which pieces they should move to yield the best results on the board; this teaches students how to solve problems on-the-fly. Calmness under pressure and patience are critical skills needed to win not just a chess game, but in life as well.

CHOIR

The Dale choirs’ reputation precedes them; From songs next to the fields at matches, to beautiful renditions at events, to their renowned “gwijas’, the sounds of the study sons of Dale echo off the Amatola mountains. Learners with a flair for music have their talent recognised and nurtured. Learners learn the value of diversity and working as a team while using music to express their passions.

DANCE COMMITTEE

The dance committee is committed to fundraising and organising the matric farewell for the outgoing matrics of that year. Event planning is their passion and they strive to make the farewell a night to remember and one that the matrics look back on with great fondness for many years to come.

DEBATING

The Debating society is one of our most active societies. They take part in both local and provincial leagues and often take top accolades. Debate offers learners the opportunity to develop the valuable life skills of critical thinking and intelligent debate. It is also an excellent networking opportunity between different schools.

DRAMA

Drama is a growing platform at Dale, where learners can explore ideas and topics in a unique and stimulating way. Drama requires discipline, cooperation and strong communication skills, both verbal and non verbal. These skills are increasingly necessary in our team-oriented work environments.

ECO-CLUB

The Eco-club has a passion for the environment and aims to promote eco-friendly practice in all spheres of schooling life. They strive to conserve the environment and encourage their peers to do the same. They have many projects on the go, ranging from bottle top collection and paper recycling to establishing indigenous trees around our beautiful campus.

FIRST AID

The aims of first aid include preserving life, preventing injuries from worsening and protecting the unconscious. These aims drive the society to serve our sportsmen and ensure that safety is paramount at Dale. Each first aider is empowered to get their level 1 certification through regular training opportunities organised by the school.

INTERACT

The Interact society is all about giving back to our community. They focus on reaching out and assisting where there is a need. Through various projects and collections they fundraise and collect to donate clothes, school uniforms and food to those in need. They also show that as an all boys school, we care for the women of our community by having an annual sanitary pad collection drive. All sanitary pads collected are donated to local schools to support girls in need.

SOCIAL MEDIA & PHOTOGRAPHY

Social media is the gateway to communication in the 21st century. Our dedicated and passionate team work tirelessly to keep our Facebook page and other social media up to date, exciting and relevant in this ever-changing digital landscape.

Representative Council of Learners (RCL)

The RCL is voted for by the learners and serves as the learners voice. They are the learners liaison with school management and help ensure the ethos of Dale is maintained and traditions are passed down.

Students’ Christian Association (SCA)

The SCA is a rapidly growing society which meets regularly to share a time of fellowship and thanksgiving within the Christan faith. A fellowship with neighbouring schools has been an excellent way to meet new people with the same worldview and values. Future community outreach projects to bring fellowship to those in need are in the pipelines.

SOUND TEAM

The Sound team is a relatively new society at Dale. They aim to bring professional sound and media to events at Dale, while learning new and exciting skills for those who wish to pursue a career in music or the music industry.
